Members of the Board
Board of Trustees
The trustees are CTC’s directors and policy setters, and have the power to appoint and dismiss members of the supervisor and management boards. The trustees set the strategic direction for the Coral Triangle Center, approve the budget, manage the assets, assess organizational risks, and review the reports and updates provided by the supervisor and management teams. As with European and US Boards of Directors, the CTC Board of Trustees are able to make amendments to the organization’s bylaws. Trustees serve in a pro bono capacity.

Yuli Ismartono is the Chair of the CTC Board of Trustees. She serves as Managing Director of AsiaViews Magazine, which circulates throughout Southeast Asia. She was formerly the Deputy Chief Editor for TEMPO Magazine, and editor of the English edition. TEMPO is the largest news magazine in Indonesia. She also serves as Managing Director of AsiaViews Magazine, which circulates throughout Southeast Asia. As a communications specialist, Yuli Ismartono has held jobs with PT Surya Citra Televisi, The Indonesian Observer, Prisma Magazine and Laporan Dari Amerika Prog, working on media relations, government relations, and as an editor and scriptwriter.She also served as the Southeast Asia Bureau Chief for TEMPO from 1983–1993 in Bangkok. She was awarded a BA in Political Science from the University of Delhi, India in 1967 and a Graduate degree in Journalism from Syracuse University, N.Y., USA in 1972.

Hendrik Sasmito is currently the Owner of a diversified group of businesses, including OEM for the World’s top 3 footwear sporting brands (Adidas, Nike and Underarmour) operating in China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia, including the principal owner of Specs and Piero, two of Indonesia’s leading sports brands. Aside from the sports footwear manufacturing and sport wholesale and retail business in Indonesia, he also owns various chemical manufacturing plants in China, and property developments in China, Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Apart from his business interests, Mr. Sasmito is also active in the community. He has been an active member of the Young President’s Organization (YPO) for over a decade, serving as YPO Indonesia Chapter Chair in 2008, and as YPO Pan Indonesia Chapter Chair in 2012 and currently WPO Co-Education Officer. Mr. Sasmito obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the California State University in Fresno, and an MBA from the National University of Singapore.

George S. Tahija served as CTC’s Chair of the Board of Trustees from 2010 to 2019. He is the Commissioner and Chairman of the Risk Management Committee of PT Austindo Nusantara Jaya Tbk. (ANJT), an Indonesian holding company publicly listed on Indonesia Stock Exchange. He served as the President Director and Chief Executive Officer of PT Austindo Nusantara Jaya and was responsible for the overall strategic direction of the ANJ Group. Mr. Tahija is Founder and Chairman of the Coral Triangle Center. Mr. Tahija also serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Darden School of BusMr. Tahija is a member of the Global Advisory Council of the Darden School, University of Virginia, and the founder and Chairman of the Coral Triangle Center (CTC) Board of Trustees. He is a founding member and Trustee of the Dharma Bermakna Foundation, dedicated to education, and the “Sekolah Mandiri Association” that operates a K-12 school in Jakarta. George is the chairman of the The Nature Conservancy (TNC) Indonesia Foundation, a member of the TNC Asia Pacific Council, and a World Presidents’ Organization (WPO) Indonesia Chapter member. He is an author of A Walk in the Clouds (2005) and a photographer for Land of Water, Vol. I, From Bali to Komodo (2006). In the past five years, he has summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania, Carstensz Pyramid, Indonesia and Mt. Elbrus, Russia. He holds a B.Sc. in mechanical engineering from Trisakti University and an M.B.A from the Darden School, University of Virginia.

Made Subadia is a founding Board member of the Coral Triangle Center. He has had a long career with the Department of Forestry, Indonesia, starting as the Head of Forestry Services in Bali province, before becoming the Head of Regional Forestry & Plantations for Bali province. He was later appointed Director General of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation. Following this post, Made Subadia took up the position of Senior Advisor to the Minister of Forestry on human resource development as well as on forestry organization, where he continues to serve to date. He has a Master’s degree in Engineering from Gajah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Central Java.

Prof. Dr. Hasjim Djalal (25 February 1934 – 12 January 2025) was a recognized authority in international maritime law and played a key role in the establishment of the Coral Triangle Center (CTC), serving as a member of its Board of Trustees from its inception in 2010 for fifteen years. He contributed to the development of the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries, and Food Security, which promoted regional collaboration to conserve marine biodiversity and fisheries in the Asia-Pacific region. He held numerous national and international positions, including Chairman and President of the International Seabed Authority, and served as Indonesia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Canada, and Germany, as well as a roving ambassador during the administrations of Presidents Soeharto and BJ Habibie. He was also an advisor to the Indonesian Maritime Council, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, the Indonesian Navy, and the Office of the Minister for the Acceleration of Development in Eastern Indonesia. Prof. Djalal’s career was marked by substantial contributions to maritime policy, diplomacy, and ocean governance. His work continues to inform and influence discussions on marine stewardship and regional cooperation.
Board of Supervisors
The Supervisory Advisory Board works closely with the management teams, providing a high degree of counsel and close supervision of the financial reports and management activities. They ensure independent audits, review investment policies, and must approve the annual financial statements of the organization.

Rahmat S. S. Soemadipradja has been practicing law for over 26 years and is a recognized leader in the Indonesian energy and natural resources sector. In 1991, Rahmat, along with Hafzan Taher, established Soemadipradja & Taher law offices.Rahmat’s main areas of practice include energy and natural resource, particularly mining, the environment, forestry, general corporate & investment, including regulatory and compliance, capital markets and project finance. Rahmat is a licensed Advocate and a member of the Indonesian Advocates Association (PERADI), the Indonesian Mining Association (IMA), the International Bar Association, the Inter-Pacific Bar Association and the Australian Mining and Petroleum Law Association. Linda Uiharto joined CTC’s Board of Supervisors in 2022. Ms. Uiharto works closely with CTC’s finance team, providing critical advice on financial and tax matters as well as guidance during our annual external audit. Ms. Uiharto is a certified tax consultant, a chartered accountant, and an expert in payroll services. She is currently the Co-Managing Director at Tricor Indonesia, part of the Tricor Group, considered one of Asia’s leading business expansion specialists, with global knowledge and local expertise in business, corporate, investor, human resources, payroll, corporate trust, debt services, and governance advisory. She is also one of the founders of PT ASA Indonesia, a business outsourcing company specialized in corporate services. Prior to these roles, Ms. Uiharto built her career for over a decade as an accountant and tax officer for major industrial companies in Indonesia. She earned her master’s degree in finance from Tarumanagara University in Jakarta and she founded PT BPOseven Inovasi Indonesia. Her company specializes in the business process outsourcing of corporate functions and has been serving clients in an extensive cross-section of industries by managing their critical finance, accounting and commercial activities

Dr. Suseno Sukoyono is a Senior Principal at the National Institute of Public Administration in Indonesia. Prior to his current role, he was an expert staff member at the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) in the field of Community and Inter-Institutional Relations. He also served as the Director General of Marine and Fisheries Human Resources Development at the MMAF. In partnership with other public, private and non-governmental organizations, he encouraged and supported the establishment of a comprehensive, adequate and representative system of marine protected areas in Indonesia, which highlighted the importance of particularly in capacity building areas. He believes the key to managing marine resources lies in how we manage and improve people, “Managing Resources: Managing People”. Dr. Sukoyono. He also served as Chair of the Interim Regional Secretariat of The Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF), Secretary General of GLOBE Indonesia and Chair of the Indonesian Ornamental Fish Council. Dr. Suseno was born in Malang and graduated received his PhD in Marine Technology from the Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) in Indonesia.

Dr. Hilmar Farid Setiadi is the Director General of Culture at the Republic of Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture, Republic of Indonesia. He is a historian, humanist, researcher and activist. In 1994, together with several artists, researchers, and cultural workers in Jakarta, he led the establishment of the Cultural Work Network. He has and also published literature and conducted extensive research and critical studies on Indonesian culture. In 2002, Dr. Hilmar was involved in the founding of the Indonesian Institute of Social History (ISSI) and was its leader until 2007. Together with ISSI, he collaborated with the Indonesian History Teachers Association to develop history teaching materials for secondary schools. Currently, he is the chairman of the Praxis association. since 2012. He is also the first person to occupy the position of Director General from a non-employment ministry level. Dr. Hilmar also teaches at the Jakarta Arts Institute (IKJ) and is active in various cultural forums such as in the Asian Regional Exchange for New Alternatives (ARENA) and the Inter Asia Cultural Studies Society as editor. He graduated from the University of Indonesia and the National University of Singapore.

Jason Tedjasukmana is the Head of Corporate Communications at Google Indonesia. He was formerly a journalist and started his career at The Jakarta Post and RCTI’s English section. He then joined Metro TV to create its first ever English-language news program, and later on became correspondent for Time Magazine. He was the president of the Jakarta Foreign Correspondents Club, an organization for foreign news correspondents based in Jakarta, for many years. In 2014, he became Head of Corporate Communications at Google Indonesia. He graduated from the University of Michigan.
Board of Managers
The Board of Managers is responsible for CTC’s organizational planning, monitoring and evaluation criteria, and financial projections. The managers provide regular program and financial reports to the trustees. Our management board is made up of experts in protected areas and fisheries, as well as our most senior staff.

Rili has worked for over 30 years to improve the management and financial sustainability of marine protected areas and reduce the use of unsustainable fisheries in Indonesia and the Asia-Pacific region. She established the Coral Triangle Center (CTC) in 2010. a Bali-based foundation focused on strengthening local leadership and capacity through an integrated portfolio of Marine Protected and Conserved Areas, customized training programs and community of practice. The Center for Marine Conservation is an integral part of CTC providing a unique meeting and learning space for professionals and the wider public. Rili works closely with partners to catalyze solutions on-site and at scale to protect coastal and marine ecosystems and ensure sustainable livelihoods. Prior to CTC Rili held several senior positions in The Nature Conservancy (TNC) from 1995 to 2011 including Program Director for the Coral Triangle region and Country Director for the Indonesia Program. She helped establish Coral Triangle Initiative for Coral Reefs, Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) in 2009 and the Women Leaders Forum (WLF) in 2014. Rili holds a MSc degree in tropical marine ecology from the University of Leiden in the Netherlands and an MSc in tropical coastal zone management from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne in the UK. She completed The Executive Program (TEP) – strategic leadership at the top – at Darden School of Business, University of Virginia (UVA) in the US in June 2013. Rili was recently awarded the World Reef Award by the International Coral Reef Society (ICRS) in Bremen (2022) – in recognition of her conservation achievements in the Coral Triangle region in the field of reef management.

Marthen is CTC’s Marine Conservation Advisor and focuses on three key areas: government relations at the regional level, national and provincial levels; MPA policy, regulations, and outreach. He oversees CTC’s growing MPA portfolio in Timor Leste and also has a technical role at the CTC Center for Marine Conservation with two key components: training and outreach with dive and boat operators, and promoting and implementing sustainable marine tourism activities in MPAs. Marthen is also an SSI instructor for CTC’s dive school. He was CTC Field Learning Sites Manager since 2011 until 2018, managing all learning site activities. This included all Nusa Penida MPA management support and on-site training activities, as well as the design, development, and management planning support to the emerging Banda Islands MPA network and potential Atauro Island learning site development in Timor-Leste. Marthen holds his Master’s Degree in Coastal and Marine Resources Management from IPB University, Bogor, Indonesia, and a Bachelor’s Degree from the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science of the IPB University, Bogor, Indonesia.

Nengah has experience in Finance, Accounting and Human Resources fields since 2000, working with financial management systems, preparing financial reports and controlling budgets against actual expenses for every project. He brings to CTC his expertise in administration, finance, and managing the organization’s HR. Following his graduation from the Faculty of Economics majoring in Accountancy at Udayana University, Bali, Nengah started his career as an auditor at PT Bank Danamon Indonesia home office, seconded to their Surabaya branch. He then worked for the Bali Spirit group establishing accounting, information, legal, formalities and human resources systems for their various businesses including the successful “Yoga Barn” and “Bali Spirit Festival”. Before joining CTC, Nengah served as the Finance and Administration Manager at PT STC Indonesia (Sustainable Trade and Consulting–bioenergy).
Scientific Advisory Board
The Scientific Advisory Board is comprised of senior experts from their field, from both within the Coral Triangle region, and internationally. They provide advisory services to support CTC’s activities.

Dr. Jompa is the Dean of the Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries at Universitas Hasanuddin (UNHAS), Indonesia, and is a marine ecologist involved in many different roles and activities across the region. Prior to his instatement as Dean he was the Director of the Research Centre for Marine, Coasts, and Small Islands at UNHAS (2014-2012). He also served the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF-Indonesia) from 2007-2011 as the Executive Secretary of the COREMAP initiative. He has been involved in the establishment and implementation of the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) since 2008, and is currently a member of the Scientific Advisory Group of the Indonesian CTI National Coordinating Committee. Since 2009, Dr. Jompa has also worked with the Indonesian Government as a member of National Commission of Fisheries Stock Assessment, and was the Chairman of the South Sulawesi Sea Partnership Consortium (2004-2007 & 2014-2018). He is also the Secretary General of the Indonesian Coral Reef Society and Chairman of the Study Committee for the Indonesian Science Agenda 2045.

Dr. Wagey is the Project Manager of the Arafura Timor Seas Ecosystem Action Program (ATSEA) and is the Regional Coordinator of the Arafura and Timor Seas Expert Forum (ATSEF). He has served as the Scientific Advisor to the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of Indonesia on Fisheries and Oceanographic issues since 2003. He has also been involved in studies of illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing and has been engaged in oceanographic surveys with scientists from the Agency for Marine and Fisheries Research (AMFR), through which he established numerous scientific collaborations between international institutions.

Dr. Adrianto is an Associate Professor in the Department of Aquatic Resource Management, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) and was elected Dean in December 2015. Prior to this, he was the Director of the Center for Coastal and Marine Resource Studies. He has been working for more than 15 years in the field of coastal and marine resource management, including fisheries. His publications have appeared in the Journal of Marine Policy, Environmental Impact Assessment Review, Environment, Development and Sustainability as well as in reputable journals on related studies in Indonesia. In 2010, he published FAO’s Technical Book on Mainstreaming Fisheries Co-Management in Indonesia and a book entitled Local Construction of Fisheries Management in Indonesia. Amongst his other publications, he has also produced a book entitled Coral Governance in Indonesia: Mainstreaming Marine Conservation Governance for Sustainable Fisheries in Indonesia (IPB Press, 2015). Since 2010, he has served within the Regional Task Force on Integrated Coastal Management for the Partnership of the Environmental Management of the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA), which has engaged him in capacity building programs for Cambodia, Thailand and Timor-Leste. He has also been coordinating a Learning Network of Ecosystem Approaches to Fisheries Management (EAFM) in Indonesia since 2014.

Prof. Nor Aieni is the Vice Chancellor at the Universiti Malaysia Terrengganu. She was previously Professor at the Perdana School of Science, Technology and Policy Innovation at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Prior to this, she was the Undersecretary and Director of the National Oceanographic Directorate, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Malaysia, and was concurrently the focal point for the Coral Triangle Initiative on Coral Reefs. Fisheries and Food Security (CTI-CFF) Malaysia National Coordinating Committee. Her work focuses on planning, designing, coordinating, and bringing together domestic and international resources and expertise to ensure application of knowledge in oceanography and marine sciences.

Prof.Dr. Ridzwan Abdul Rahman currently works at the Institute of Sustainable Agrotechnology, Universiti Malaysia Perlis. Ridzwan does research in Marine Biology, Environmental Science and Aquaculture. His current project is about affordable recirculating aquaculture system for freshwater species.

Dr. Lim is the Director of the ASEAN Center for Biodiversity, Philippines. A licensed veterinarian from the University of the Philippines, Dr. Lim started her career at DENR with the Marine Turtle Conservation Program. In just 14 years, she rose to the position of Director of the Biodiversity Management Bureau, where her responsibilities included guiding national directions on protected areas and wildlife conservation, and closely working with the Philippine Congress on legislative priorities for conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity in the country, among others.Dr. Lim also has extensive international experience on technical and policy advisory for biodiversity and environmental management, with recent ones including chairing the 18th Meeting of the ASEAN Working Group on Coastal and Marine Environment in May 2017, as well as the Convention on Biological Diversity Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice for 2017-2018. Dr. Lim is also the CTI-CFF focal point in the Philippines and manages the implementation of the CTI-CFF National Plan of Action in her country.

Ms. Kalim is the head of the Biodiversity Branch at the Department of Environment and Conservation. Ms. Kalim is also the focal point of the CTI-CFF National Coordinating Committee in Papua New Guinea. She has been instrumental in ensuring that the CTI –CFF regional mechanisms have been in place in terms of facilitating the inaugural Leaders Declaration and others. She leads a team in Papua New Guinea that coordinates the planning and implementation of the PNG Marine Program.

Dr. Mungkaje is a marine and fisheries ecologist with extensive teaching and research experience in these fields at the University of Papua New Guinea. As Director of the Motupore Island Research Center, he leads the university’s research and teaching outreach in marine sciences. He provides technical advice to local organizations, such as the Mahonia na Dari- Guardians of the Sea, on topics ranging from fisheries, marine ecology, marine conservation and environmental (ecological) impact assessments.

Dr. Walton was formerly the program director for NOAA’s International Marine Protected Area Capacity Building Program, which has benefitted marine protected area practitioners in over 30 countries. In this capacity, Dr. Walton was responsible for marine protected area capacity development in six regions of the world, including the Coral Triangle. Her expertise includes capacity building needs assessments, program development, curriculum development and training. Leaving the capacity building program in 2015, she now develops leadership learning opportunities for the next generation of marine conservationists through various training and leadership programs all over the world.

Dr. Salm was raised in Mozambique and has a Ph.D. from The Johns Hopkins University. He has 50 years’ experience in international marine conservation and ecotourism, working in the Indian Ocean, Arabia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, the Arctic and Antarctic. Although retired from full-time employment Rod’s principal focus remains conserving coral reefs in the face of global change, including warming seas, ocean acidification, and escalating use and threats. He is able to achieve this through his position as Senior Adviser Emeritus for The Nature Conservancy’s Pacific Division Marine Program. Rod is the author of Marine and Coastal Protected Areas: A Guide for Planners and Managers. Published by IUCN in its third edition in 2000, this book serves as a widely consulted reference for researchers and experts on marine conservation. In 1999, Rod joined The Nature Conservancy to head up marine conservation in Asia Pacific and was instrumental in developing The Nature Conservancy’s Global Marine Initiative. His work had resilience to climate change as a principle focus and grew from the need for a field application response to coral bleaching in the western Pacific to a global program on coral reefs and resilience. Based in Honolulu, Hawaii, Rod has played a strong role in training and mentoring conservation scientists from many countries. He has done this to assist them in both interpretation and field applications of science to conservation practice and to help guide in their career development.
